Socrates on the Beach—that's after the Paul Valéry dialogue Eupalinos, or The Architect (as well as the name of a Joseph McElroy essay), with Socrates describing finding a piece of driftwood on the beach when he was young and how it filled him with wonder. A few excerpts:
“Nothing beautiful is separable from life, and life is that which dies.”
“By dint of construction…I truly believe that I have constructed myself…To construct oneself, to know oneself–are these two distinct acts or not?”
This journal is for longer essays and fiction (not poetry)—at least 3000 to 10,000 words. Contributors will be paid. Each issue will have six to eight pieces in it.
